How many times has your team participated in the event?

The 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge will be the first time the Flinders Automotive Solar Team (FAST) has entered the event. Flinders University has a history of electric vehicle development dating back to the 1970’s, and the Investigator Mark III is the third electric car Flinders University has built.

What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?

The continuing approach that the Flinders Automotive Solar Team follows is to evolve and promote the existing and experimental technologies developed by Flinders University students to manufacture a viable future mode of transportation that is an everyday, family friendly, road registered vehicle. Investigator Mark III is motivated by the desire to build a better future using a combination of our skills in research and technological innovations; as well as a desire to promote positive environmental change.

What is unique about your solar car?

The Investigator Mark III will be the first Solar Car made by the Flinders Automotive Solar Team. FAST’s solar car will be a functional automotive vehicle that also incorporates a number of new and experimental technologies. Besides the automotive and solar technologies, a Machine Learning based Strategy Engine (to give strategic recommendations during the race) and an experimental mesh networking based Communication System (to communicate between race and support vehicles). With all of this, the Investigator Mark III is being designed in a way to be a base for future improvements and technologies to be implemented in years to come.

Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?

To participate in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge means to engage in an international effort that spans decades, to advance and increase awareness of solar technology. A massive journey that presents many challenges for all teams involved. By participating our team hopes to engage and collaborate with people from all over the globe and to share the knowledge and experiences we have to create a better and cleaner future for the world.

What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?

Our Australian team is really excited to experience to complete the journey of the 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, as well as meeting other teams from different countries and building collaborative relationships to create a better future.
