How many times has your team participated in the event?
Sunswift has participated in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 10 times and first started competing in 1999.
What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?
Since we are using the same car as we raced in 2017, we are trying to use the large amount of experience we have with Violet to ensure that the car is well tested and reliable so that we minimise down time. Our goal is to have zero down time for the entire journey. In 2018, when we broke the record for the most efficient electric car to cross Australia, we only spent 1 hour on the side of the road over the 4000km we traveled.
What is unique about your solar car?
Sunswift was the first cruiser team to include a wind tunnel to reduce the frontal area of the solar car and reduce drag. Since then, we have improved upon the design and we hope this gives us a competitive advantage during the challenge.
Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is a once in lifetime opportunity for young engineers that want to develop their skills, in terms of engineering, but also working within large teams. I know many team members who go on to work in industries directly related to more sustainable forms of transport and renewable energy because of the experience they gained being a part of designing and building a solar car and racing it in the BWSC.
What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?
This year, the team is planning to visit Uluru when we are driving from Sydney to Darwin. Many of the team have not yet visited this iconic part of Australia and this will be an awesome photo opportunity with the sunset, team and the solar car.
