How many times has your team participated in the event?

Three times before, in 2011, 2015 and 2017.

What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?

The philosophy behind Ortus is to push the limits of the silicon catamaran. In 2017, we competed with a modified 2015-spec car, so now is our chance to field a vehicle designed specifically for these regulations! Against the old car, we've gone lower, smaller and lighter, resulting in a huge leap forward.

What is unique about your solar car?

Ortus is the first DUEM car with a full composite roll structure, which has allowed us to shrink the canopy size and frontal area of the vehicle while reducing weight by almost 5 kilos. We're also targeting a weight reduction of 30% over the old car, so we'll hopefully be grabbing the 'Best solar car diet' award!

Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?

The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is the world's premier solar car event, which is why we're so excited to be returning for a fourth time. The chance to speak to bright young engineers from around the world is fantastic, and driving across the barren Outback is quite an adventure. Also, it's often cold and wet in Durham, and nothing beats and Australian suntan!

What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?

Crossing the finish line in Adelaide will be pretty special, and we're really looking forward to meeting all the other teams in the pitlane and seeing what all their hard work has produced!
