SA’S Sunsprite Takes a Final Spin Before the Start Line

Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
31 July 2025
Debut South Australian Solar Vehicle Association (SASVA) took their solar car ‘Sun Sprite’ for a high intensity
spin session at Adelaide’s Velodrome today as part of final preparations for the 2025 Bridgestone World
Solar Challenge – a 3,022-kilometre, cross-country endurance race.
Team Manager, James Trezona, said the Velodrome was the perfect place to test the performance of both car and
driver. SunSprite’s light weight, aerodynamic design balances speed, efficiency and stability. Track and road
testing on the way to the Darwin start line gives us valuable insight into speed, handling and on-road safety.
‘We’re proudly South Australian and keen to showcase local industry knowledge. Our car is affordable,
practical, and sustainable, many of its components have been recycled and repurposed. The solar cells on
our vehicle are manufactured locally and specially modified for race conditions,’ James said.
‘With some of the event’s youngest competitors, some still in high school, we aim to give our students and
apprentices real world experience and job-ready skills. Our solar car uses readily accessible materials and
commercially available technology that they’ll likely be working on when they enter the workforce.
‘The BWSC is so unique. It’s a 3,000-kilometre training ground where industry can test and prove equipment
reliability and competitors gain life changing capabilities and experience beyond the classroom or workshop.
“We can’t wait for the start line,” James said.
BWSC Event Ambassador, Chris Selwood AM, said he was looking forward to seeing the SASVA team in
action.
“The mix of students, industry and educators in the SASVA team and the philosophy of promoting practical
training and career readiness embodies what the BWSC is all about. The event is a bridge between education
and industry and champions a more sustainable future through renewable technologies,” Chris said.
