Event Classes
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge seeks to inspire some of the brightest young people on the planet to address the imperatives of sustainable transport
Primarily a design competition, this biennial event drives the development of energy-efficient vehicles as part of the global challenge to decarbonise mobility. The event features three classes that represent the diversity of energy efficient vehicles and their differing design philosophies.

Toyota Challenger Class
The Toyota Challenger Class is born of the original concept: Build a car capable of driving from Darwin to Adelaide on the silent power of nature. It is an extreme endurance challenge where the secrets of success will include efficiency, reliability and attention to detail.

Cruiser Class
The Cruiser competition was created to encourage ‘green to the mainstream’ concept cars kitted out with innovative, sustainable, and potentially practical features that could find their way into real-world design.

Innovation Class
Innovation Class is a non-competitive class for demonstrating innovative concepts that could set the future direction for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.

Historic Class
The non-competitive 40-year Anniversary Historic Class is an opportunity to commemorate the trail-blazing sun-chasers of past World Solar Challenge events.
With such a diverse field over forty years there are endless possibilities. It could be earlier champions, teams whose journey led to commercial technology that shaped the renewable energy industry or those inspired to take up the sustainability baton around the world.
The degree of program integration, demonstration and display in Darwin, Adelaide and on route, will depend on individual entries. These vehicles will feature in track competitions, parades, and special events along the route.
