How many times has your team participated in the event?
The Adelaide University Solar Racing Team has participated in the last 3 Bridgestone World Solar Challenges, with our best result coming in 2019, finishing top in Australia and 16th overall.
What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?
The design philosophy of the Lumen II revolves around two key principles; reliability and safety. We prioritise reliability as we have not yet successfully made it all the way from Darwin to Adelaide, due to mechanical failures. This year we are focussing on designing a car that maintains a high top speed, with stronger mechanical components that will push us through the 3000km journey. Safety is at the core of our design philosophy. While we aim to develop a car that can win the BWSC, it is crucial that our drivers have a safe journey while racing for the AUSRT.
What is unique about your solar car?
The design of the Lumen II displays the AUSRT signature red as a gradient to our signature blue, replicating the sun rising on the horizon of the Australian desert, which our car will be soon tested against in October.
Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?
We really value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge for a number of reasons. The challenge provides a platform for us to showcase our technological innovation that we have been working hard to design and build on a global stage. This allows us to assist in the movement towards sustainable transportation solutions. Secondly, we value meeting other teams from around the world and sharing knowledge and our experiences. Lastly, the BWSC is an experience of a lifetime which will not only test our car, but challenge our team's skills, resilience, and problem-solving to help us all grow as individuals.
What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?
We are from South Australia, so we have the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful country all year round. However, we are very excited to meet teams from all around the world and race through the Aussie outback with them.
