How many times has your team participated in the event?
Since 1989, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team has participated 12 times. This year will be the 13th time the team has competed.
What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?
Our goal is to push the limits of what is possible in solar car design by evaluating every possible opportunity for improved efficiency. At the highest level, our design philosophy includes optimization focused around producing clean and simple designs. Through data collected and lessons learned from past solar cars, we have developed novel tools and processes to use, and grounded our existing requirements with real-world, empirical data. In pursuit of maximized performance, we have also placed an emphasis on building risk mitigation strategies into our design.
What is unique about your solar car?
Astrum, our 2023 vehicle, features architecture that no other University of Michigan Solar Car has implemented and a new power electronics system that harnesses the potential of the latest technological innovations. This year, we are also placing significant emphasis on quality executions of our visions, meaning that our 2023 vehicle was designed with the manufacturing process in mind, included a thorough integration of vehicle subsystems, and incorporated novel manufacturing and assembly procedures.
Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is the world’s premier solar racing event. Our team considers it as an opportunity to push the limits of solar technology, to participate in one of the most globally innovative spaces, and to strive to be the best in the world. It is always an honor to be among some of the brightest and most dedicated students as they come together with one common goal of making a better future.
What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?
Our team is most excited to meet other teams and see how they have tackled the engineering challenge and innovated to the highest level. We’re also looking forward to experiencing Australian culture and getting glimpses of Australian wildlife!
