2027 Dates & Regulations Announced!

Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
07 May 2026
40 years brings new energy but what’s next?
In 2027, the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, (BWSC) will celebrate a forty-year legacy, driving change, sustainability and innovation. Today, BWSC Ambassador, Chris Selwood, AM, revealed next years’ time slot as 22–29 August, and announced the release of much anticipated Event Regulations and new classes.
‘As the world struggles with reliance on fossil fuels and disruptions to supply chains, it is fitting that the 2027 BWSC regulations continue to focus on self-sufficiency by harnessing energy directly from the environment. In addition to solar, we expect Toyota Challenger Class teams will continue to advance new energy innovation and optimisation, and in the Cruiser Class, further evolve solar integration and battery technology, to improve range and off-grid charging opportunities,’ Chris said.
‘In the Toyota Challenger Class, solar collection and strategy remain the focus over energy storage, with cars allowed six square metres of solar collector and just three kilowatt-hours of storage capacity. This unique feature of the event encourages teams to harvest additional energy sources, such as the innovative fins we’ve seen in recent events, that ‘sail’ on the wind,’ he said.
‘In 2027, Cruiser Class, teams who impress judges with real-world design innovation will be rewarded by a time advantage at Katherine. In 2027, Judges will be looking for more than gadgets and slick wraps – the DNA of these future-focused concept cars must exhibit potential to inspire mainstream vehicle design.
‘We thank our longstanding Title Sponsor, Bridgestone Corporation, and Major Support Partners, the South Australian Motor Sport Board, and Tourism & Events Northern Territory for their continued support of this incredible adventure that inspires generational talent and a greener future. The anniversary year brings an opportunity to honour our incredible alumni and their achievements in Australia and across the globe. The BWSC creates a domino effect toward a more sustainable world, by sparking innovative thinking, break-through technology and lasting impact – these success stories will feature in our 2027 program.
‘40 years is a significant milestone for an event that was designed to disrupt and push the boundaries. To continue this legacy and celebrate past achievements, I am pleased to announce two new classes: a one-off, special 40th Anniversary Historic Class and future-focused, Innovation Class.
‘The non-competitive Historic Class is the opportunity to commemorate the vision, passion and trail-blazing sun-chasers of past BWSC events. The degree of demonstration and display in Darwin, Adelaide and on route, will depend on the capability of individual entries.
‘The BWSC recognises the future of sustainable mobility is shifting from standalone technologies, like solar, to integrated, intelligent approaches combining advanced new energy alternatives and digital innovation. The ‘Innovation Class’, will be open to teams, alumni, individuals and organisations to demonstrate concepts to help shape the future of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. We’re asking what next impossible challenge needs to be solved on the road to sustainability and self-sufficiency? How do we source and harness new energy that is freely available and materials that are less wasteful so everyday people can make everyday journeys comfortably, safely, reliably and efficiently in a way that won’t cost the earth? What step change needs to be taken in future BWSC events to inspire next generation engineers and designers to turn the dream of sustainable, affordable mobility into reality?
‘Expressions of Interest for the 40th Anniversary commemorative Historic Class and future focussed Innovation Class are now welcome. Regulations are live on the BWSC website with Applications for Entry to officially open on World Environment Day, 5 June,’ Chris concluded.
Quotes attributable to Emily Bourke, South Australian Minister for Environment, Climate and Water and Minister for Tourism: “As a global leader in renewable energy, South Australia is an inspiring home base for the BWSC. SA is on track to achieve our target of net 100 per cent electricity from renewables by the end of 2027 – a fitting celebration for the BWSC in its 40th anniversary year.
“The BWSC provides unique real-world experience for the State’s next generation of innovators. It strengthens skill sets and talent pathways, inspires STEM proficiencies and importantly acts as a is a bridge between education and industry. It acts as a catalyst for real-world new energy solutions to mitigate climate change.
“It’s also a fantastic drawcard, bringing competitors and enthusiasts from across Australia and abroad to experience South Australia’s world-class hospitality and exceptional tourism offerings.”
Quote attributable to Marie-Clare Boothby, the Northern Territory Minister for Tourism and Hospitality and the Minister for Major Events: “There’s nowhere else like the Territory, with our one-of-a-kind experiences, events, and environment, and the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is the perfect example.
