61: Wakayama University Solar Car Team
About The Team
How many times has your team participated in the event?
We are participating in this event for the second time.
What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?
Our solar car is designed based on three core principles that reflect our design philosophy: efficiency, collaboration, and reliability.
First, we pursue efficiency by minimizing driving resistance through weight reduction and aerodynamic optimization—achieving a 9% improvement in drag coefficient (Cd) and an 11% reduction in rolling resistance compared to our previous model.
Second, we value collaboration and transparency in engineering. By sharing structural analysis data via the cloud, we streamline communication and coordination within our team.
Finally, we prioritize reliability. Through repeated test runs, we gather real-world data to inform and refine future designs, ensuring consistent electrical performance under varying conditions.
What is unique about your solar car?
Our solar car is characterized by two unique features.
First, the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) as the body material has improved both weight and rigidity. By fundamentally revising the lamination process and other structural design elements, we achieved a lighter and more rigid body compared to the previous model.
Second, the cowl features a streamlined design that makes natural airflow visible. This shape reduces aerodynamic drag during driving and contributes to improved ride stability.
Why does youre team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?
Our team has two values for participating in the competition. The first is to run with our solar car in a big competition, the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. We have competed in major competitions in Japan almost every year since 2006, even winning the championship in 2016. It ended with the 2021 tournament. We consider its end as a chance to get into higher level than the Japan nationals. The second is to meet sponsors’ expectations. Our solar car is designed with the money we get from sponsors, so we want to finish the competition and thank our sponsors for their support.
What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?
We are looking forward to vast deserts and the unique Australian plants. It is obvious that ecosystem of Australia is completely different from that of Japan. So, we are exciting seeing them which are not found in Japan.
