In a demonstration of Nordic cool, three Bridgestone World Solar Challenge teams from Sweden and their
solar cars took to the ice at the Darwin Ice Skating rink.

With some even showing their prowess on skates, team members from JU Solar, Chalmers and HUST, the
current world record holder for the fastest solar car on ice, are hoping their chilled approach and cool
climate experience can give them an edge for the BWSC’s first winter competition.

Matilda Svensson Duric, Team Manager for JU Solar Team, said their solar car Nova Lumina – which means
‘new light’ – was designed and built with a more sustainable future in mind.

“We prioritise eco-friendly materials such as flax fibre and Swedish steel. Our droplet-shaped, cutting-edge
design challenges traditional concepts and enhances aerodynamics. The solar panels are angled to capture
as much of the sun’s energy as possible during the journey from north to south,” Matilda said.

Emma Christiansen, Team Manager for HUST, is hoping their record-breaking speed prowess on ice can be
reflected on the Stuart Highway.
