Dutch team Twente in Red Discover, signalled an early intent to lead from the front, working their way from 7th place on the grid to take an early lead in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.
Twente reached the first Control Stop at Katherine at 11.44 Darwin time, just 10 seconds ahead of compatriots, Brunel in Nuna 13, with both teams travelling just over 86 km per hour. Third into Katherine, defending Belgian champions Innoptus in Infinite Apollo, also navigated to the front quickly, moving from 16th place on the grid to be third into Katherine at 11.58, just 14 minutes behind the leading cars.
Australia’s Western Sydney in Unlimited 6.0 were 4th into Katherine at 12.04.44 followed by Top Dutch at 12.10.57. Five teams were within 18 minutes of Top Dutch – Tokai from Japan, Neumann from Hungary, Sonnenwagen from Germany, Michigan from the US and aCentauri from Switzerland.
By the second Control Stop, Dunmarra, 633 kilometres south of Darwin, Brunel had taken the lead, closely followed Twente and Innoptus with just minutes between them.
